Student Awards in Geography

On May 9 2022 the Cyprus Geographical Association and the Geography Inspectorate of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, and Youth organized the event “Geography Day 2022” which was held at the Cultural Center of the Municipality of Strovolos. During the event, high school students were awarded prizes and diplomas for the Pancyprian Student Competition in the geography of Cyprus on «The impacts of climate change in Cyprus and ways to address it.».

The competition was addressed to students of public and private secondary schools. The interest and participation of teachers and students was satisfactory. Papers were submitted by students from twenty schools and the level of work was generally very good.

The first prize was awarded jointly to the second-grade students of Apostolos Pavlos Paphos High School Nikolina Sergidou, Konstantina Frangou, Eleana Charalambous and Aphrodite Chatziekonomou and the 3^rd grade students of Aglantzia High School Diamanto Konstantinou, Odysseas Pieridis, Maria Patiniou and Markos Socratous.

During the event, the students of Aglantzia High School who won the first prize and the second grade student of Vergina Larnaca High School Maria Evangelou who won second prize presented their studies.

Geography Day 2018

On April 25, 2018 the Cyprus Geographical Association organized the annual “Geography Day” event. The association awarded prizes and diplomas to students of secondary schools who were distinguished in the Pancyprian Student Competition on the geography of Cyprus.

Cypriot students win two medals at International Geography Olympiad

Two bronze medals won a four-student team from the EnglishSchool, Nicosia, that participated in the 14th International Geography Olympiad held in Belgrade from 2 to 8 August 2017. The medals were awarded to Savvas Markou and Andreas Stylianou. Close to winning a medal were the two other students of the team, Charalambos Ioannou and Athena Eytychiou.

It should be noted that this is the second time that Cyprus participates in an International Geography Olympiad, after an invitation by the International Geographical Union and the Serbian organizing committee to the Cyprus Geographical Association, which was the organizer and coordinator of the whole effort. The selection of the students to represent Cyprus was made after a national geography competition. The Cyprus team was led by the geography teachers Harut Boyadjian and Ioannis Tsingos of the English School, Nicosia.

This year, 164 students aged 16-19 participated in the Olympiad, from 41 countries, among which the United States, Russia, Australia, China, Japan and the United Kingdom.
